The annual Singapore Book Awards organised by the Singapore Books Publishers Association (SBPA) recognises the best in local book publishing. The winners are announced at an award ceremony held each year at the National Library of Singapore. The main award categories include literary work, education titles, professional titles and children’s books. The awards also honour the finalists in a number of subsidiary categories. To be eligible for the main award, works must i) be published in one of the four official languages of Singapore; ii) be sold in hard copies both locally and overseas; iii) be legally deposited with the National Library of Singapore; and iv) be available in bookstores both in Singapore and overseas.

Dutch microbiologist Professor Gertjan Medema was awarded this year’s Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize for his research into wastewater-based epidemiology. His studies showed that monitoring traces of COVID-19 in wastewater can serve as an early warning system for the outbreak, even before any cases are reported in the community.

Medema’s work inspired Singapore’s national water agency PUB, and home team science and technology agency HTX, to begin using wastewater testing as part of their response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This “tightens the connections between the water and health sectors”, as he put it, and could help other countries combat the virus.

A whopping half a million dollars in cash rewards were handed out to Team Singapore athletes at the SNOC’s Athletes’ Achievement Awards and Appreciation Ceremony at Novotel on Stevens last night. Swimming star Toh Wei Soong took home the most money with his hat-trick of gold medals at October’s Hangzhou Asian Para Games, pocketing $270,000.

The event’s defending champion Talor Gooch and fellow Australian Brendan Steele will head the list of favorites this week at LIV Golf Singapore. They are joined by a host of players, including world No. 1 Jon Rahm. This is the third edition of the tournament, which will take place at the prestigious Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore.
