The new Kennedy Town Swimming Pool in the heart of the city is a stunning spaceship-like complex designed by architect Terry Farrell and completed this year along Victoria Harbour. The new pool takes the place of an older public pool and is intended to attract more people to this part of the city. It took eight years to complete, but it was well worth the wait. The design was tricky: How to fit a massive municipal pool on a trapezoidal piece of land that is part of the harbor? And how to integrate it into the existing residential buildings without blocking their views? The answer was a spaceship-like design that is both elegant and functional.

Its interior is modern, with lots of glass and a glass-bottomed pool. The outdoor pool has a series of springboards and diving platforms at different heights to challenge swimmers. And the whole thing is topped by a transparent insulated tensile membrane from Birdair. The membrane reflects the color of the sky and helps reduce heat gain while maintaining a comfortable temperature inside the pool.

There is also an open-air pool terrace and a restaurant serving a menu of fresh, healthy cuisine. It’s a great place to unwind with a drink or a light snack and take in the impressive view. Guests can also rent lounge chairs or book private cabanas.

A day pass to the pool is HK$300, but if you plan on spending more than a couple hours, it’s a good idea to get an Octopus card, which can be used for all public transportation and many of the city’s best-known pool venues. The card can be loaded with a variety of prepaid services, including daily or monthly passes to the pool.
