Hong Kong Art Prize Winner Announced

The prize money for the 2019 Art Prize has been announced, and Hong Kong made its biggest-ever appearance on the shortlist. The city boasted nine artists on the list, including two finalists, and nearly two-thirds of the shortlist were women. The winner will be awarded a total of $2 million.

The late director Benny Chan was posthumously honoured with the best director award at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards for his cops-and-robbers actioner Raging Fire. The film also won best film editing, best film music and the action choreography award. Actor Andy Lau and producer Donnie Yen were among the other winners.

HKFC also increased the Group 1 prize money on offer for this year’s 2024 LONGINES Hong Kong International Races and FWD Champions Day, with increases of HK$8 million and HK$74 million respectively. This brings the total prize money for the 12 Group 1 races to HK$265 million, making it one of the highest in the world.

To ensure that the prize money is distributed fairly, HKJC implements a variety of measures to guarantee the integrity and fairness of the draw. The drawing process is observed by the security and customer service departments, while the balls used in the draw are checked on a regular basis. In addition, the draw machine is inspected and tested on a regular basis. In the event of any irregularities, a full investigation is launched immediately.

In order to maintain the high quality of the award, the operation of the BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE should be carried out professionally and objectively. An independent review procedure has been formulated and no organization or individual may exert undue influence on the review process. In addition, all nominees should support the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and hold high social morality and professional ethics.

Nominees should have a significant contribution to science and technology in fields including, but not limited to: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and Energy, Advanced Manufacturing, FinTech. In principle, only five persons or teams (including postdoctoral fellows and students) are awarded in each field every year.

The winner of the first prize will receive a cheque for HK$5 million, and the second-prize winner will get a cheque for HK$3 million. The third-placed winner will receive a cheque for HK$1 million. If no one wins the first prize, the money that would have been paid for the first and second prizes will go into a jackpot fund for the next draw.
